While individuals inside the Internet Marketing field love Internet Marketing for the possibilities it provides, it is also painfully obvious that people who do not work in this sector tend to view it through a highly critical eye. There are many rumors and misconceptions around about IM and also the whole internet. The people who operate within it recognize and understand how excellent it is but it still posses a unique challenge: do you want to be judged for it in your “regular” life?
A many folks who make money in Internet Marketing use pseudonyms. They use fake names because they would like to keep their Internet Marketing work apart from everything else that they do, particularly when they only do the work part time. Many brand-new and part time IMers fear of being discovered by bosses and friends. Of course, even though you don’t care about that kind of thing, it still continues to be a question: should you use a pseudonym for your online business?
There are plenty of benefits included in using pseudonyms. The largest benefit, not surprisingly, is being able to create an identity separate from your personal life and making it easier to keep the two from running into them. If you work in a field not online in which a professional presence is very important and people view the internet as something less than worthy, using a pseudonym helps to protect you from prying eyes on both sides of the field.
IMers are also more likely to use pseudonyms when they want to sell products in different niches. This way it will be possible to create expert level reputations for yourself in a variety of fields without having to worry that people think you are only a dabbler. You don’t have to fear of being asked about inconsistant products or niches because you’ll be working in them under different names.
Sadly, however, often people choose to use pseudonyms because they do not want to pay taxes on the money that they earn in their businesses. They appear to think that if they do not do business under their legal names then they do not have to report any of the money that they earn to the IRS. It is vital that you do not fall for this kind of faulty logic. Even if you do business under a different name your money counts as income and you are responsible for it. Beyond that, the IRS will eventually find out about it–everyone that tries to cheat the system fails.
Whether or not you decide to use a pseudonym for the business you do is absolutely your choice. For some people it is much simpler to use one name for their “real” lives and something different for their “online” lives. Other individuals like keeping things under their lawful names because doing so is just easier.
